Ladybird eating an aphid

Graham Shephard

Ladybird caught in the act of devouring an aphid. Ladybirds are voracious predators of smaller insects, such as the luckless aphid being eaten here. They either eat their prey whole or suck out its insides. Given their proficiency at killing aphids, they are increasingly used as a type of organic pest control by farmers and gardeners looking for alternatives to chemical pesticides.
