This is a nanocomposite material; a tiny tube of carbon containing
a crystal of iron (yellow). This material combines the strength
of a carbon nanotube with the magnetic properties of iron. The magnetic
field is shown by the arching lines: the crystal acts like a tiny
bar magnet.
Philips CM300 transmission electron microscope. Electron holography
revealed the field lines.
